Vertos Medical Inc. was founded to advance the treatment of patients suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Vertos Medical's proprietary technologies include mild, which offers an outpatient, minimally invasive, fluoroscopically guided treatment for LSS. The mild device kit has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for decompression of the lumbar spine.
LSS is primarily a degenerative, age-related narrowing of the lower spinal canal that causes pressure on the nerves, leading to increased pain and reduced mobility. LSS is a common condition, with more than 1.2 million patients diagnosed and treated nationwide each year.3
LSS is suffered mainly by the middle-aged and elderly. Onset generally occurs after age 50. The prevalence of LSS is likely to increase over the next decade. The number of Americans over age 50 will grow by 18 million between 2009 and 2019.6
mild provides this growing elderly LSS patient population a safe, outpatient, minimally invasive treatment that can help them stand longer and walk farther with less pain.1 It has been performed on more than 15,000 patients and has been proven to be safe and effective in 11 clinical trials and more than 16 physician-reviewed clinical journal articles. No major complications related to the devices or the procedure have been reported in any clinical trial.2
Vertos Medical conducts a rigorous training program to certify physicians to perform the mild procedure. Physician training sessions are conducted at Vertos Medical's headquarters/training center in Aliso Viejo, CA. Training includes both didactic and hands-on laboratory sessions.
