Company Profile

Established in 2005 and based in Aliso Viejo, California, Vertos Medical is a growing, privately-held medical device company that develops and markets innovative, minimally invasive devices for the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS).

The mild opportunity: a market with untapped potential.

Significant numbers of Americans suffer from the chronic pain and immobility caused by LSS, a degenerative age-related narrowing of the lower spinal canal that causes pressures on the nerves.

While there are many causes for LSS, the most common is a degenerative etiology. As the spinal canal progressively narrows due to thickening and/or bulging of soft tissue and venous congestion, patients develop pain that severely limits daily activities such as walking and, in severe cases, even standing.

LSS is now the most commonly diagnosed spinal disease in the U.S. geriatric population. Each year, in the U.S. alone, approximately 1.5 million individuals are diagnosed with the condition. And the number of LSS patients is predicted to increase by 18 million over the next ten years, as the population over age 50 continues to grow exponentially.

Vertos Medical's mild (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression) procedure fills an important void in LSS treatment. This new FDA-cleared procedure represents a viable option for failed ESI patients as well as those concerned about the invasiveness of major surgery such as laminotomy, laminectomy and spinal fusion.

Since the mild procedure is minimally invasive/percutaneous, shorter inpatient therapy and recovery in comparison with other treatment options for LSS may apply.

mild can be performed with fluoroscopic guidance in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia or MAC support.

A recent analysis of a longitudinal database of Medicare patients shows that, as time passes after diagnosis of LSS, the cost and significance of the treatment increases.

Treatment cost - 1 quarter post diagnosis*

Treatment cost - 2-3 quarters post diagnosis*

Treatment cost - 11-12 quarter post diagnosis*

* Based on longitudinal CMS database analysis of patients diagnosed with LSS and surgically treated

Highly effective results with LSS patients.

Patients who have undergone the mild treatment report:

reduction in pain or greater (VAS)

improvement in mobility or greater (ODI)

Similar results have been demonstrated 6 to 12 months after the mild procedure. No technical or other device-related complications or adverse effects have been reported to date.

A new frontier in the treatment of LSS

The mild procedure is easy for physicians to learn. Training sessions are primarily conducted at Vertos Medical's Headquarters/Training Center in Aliso Viejo, California and can be completed in 2-3 hours. Training includes both hands-on and didactic laboratory sessions with fluoroscopy.
