“Know Your Back Story” Helps Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain Access Nonopioid Therapies

A new health awareness program is helping millions of patients suffering from chronic low back pain gain access to nonopioid pain management treatment options and identify the potential causes for their recurring problem.

This September – in recognition of National Pain Awareness Month – Vertos Medical partnered with The Harris Poll to raise the profile of the more than 72.3 million patients suffering from chronic low back pain. That’s more than arthritis, diabetes, or heart disease.

“Nearly 3 out of 10 U.S. adults – 72.3 million people – currently suffer from chronic low back pain, surpassing the number of Americans who have arthritis, diabetes or heart disease, according to a large new Harris Poll. Over a third of those surveyed (36%) rate their back pain as “severe” or the “worst pain possible” and nearly half (44%) said they’ve experienced back pain for at least five years.”

A majority of respondents from that survey say their chronic low back pain has harmed several aspects of their lives, including standing, walking, sleeping and getting exercise. Other findings from the survey:

LOW AWARENESS OF ENLARGED LIGAMENT
Yet, many of these patients have never been told by their health care provider the exact cause of their chronic low back pain. For some patients, those diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) an enlarged ligament can be the cause. LSS can cause low back and leg pain.

An enlarged ligament squeezes spinal nerves and often causes debilitating low back pain and leg pain or numbness. It can be confirmed using diagnostic imaging, such as an MRI, and by seeking a spine health doctor.

On a recent Patients Rising podcast, Dr. Stanley Golovac discussed nonopioid pain management treatment options and why expanded access to those alternatives can improve patient outcomes and postpone the recurrence of problems.

THE “MILD” PROCEDURE
Dr. Golovac gave the example of the mild® procedure, which can be performed in an outpatient surgery center in about 30 minutes. It addresses a significant root cause of LSS through a nonsurgical procedure.

The procedure is FDA cleared and has long-term/positive clinical data of pain relief. It is one of several nonopioid options available and is covered by Medicare.

If you want to be part of that online group, go to KnowYourBackStory.com to learn more, tell your back story, and hopefully, find relief! Patients suffering from chronic low back pain can learn more about nonopioid pain management treatment options and how to gain access. Patients can also gain support by sharing their story.
